Today, we are living in the fast paced world of electronics, gadgets, technological breakthroughs and online media. Lately, online media has proved to be very effective and beneficial for the world. It has made our lives easy in ways that could not have been imagined just a few decades back. It has proved to be a great source for people to express their opinions, explore new avenues and network with people all across the globe. But on the other hand, how does it impact the kids.
The Impact of TV and Online Media On Preschoolers
Its exposure to children has raised many questions. Online media exposes children towards certain items which are not suitable for them at all. Whatever they watch over TV or internet or any social media platforms impacts their mind. Children can’t decide the right and wrong for them. According to a 2010 survey, there is a considerable increase in the number of kids using social media platforms and the internet. Children are likely to imitate the stuff they watch over the internet, TV, or any other social media platforms.
Too Much Exposure to TV Can be Harmful
Watching TV can be addictive causes children ignore their physical exercises, and at times studies, as well. They are prone to childhood obesity, poor social development, and aggressive behavior. Some children have problems adjusting to their preschool surroundings. Television has proved to be a dangerous babysitter for the children.
After observing these facts, American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend the parents of a child under two to watch any kind of TV programs.
Exposure to Online Media
Due to the explosive growth of social media, children under 13 are using Facebook. Technically, anyone under the age of 13 years is not allowed to join Facebook, but there is no actual way to implement this rule. Usage of whatsapp, youtube and any other social media platforms should be limited for kids and it should always be with parents approval. Children aged between 5 and above can be seen using it.
Preschools Can Help
Preschool can help a lot in this regard. They can help a child overcome this online media addiction.. However, it also requires support from the parents. Preschools must promote those programs which are only informative and help a child learn new things. Only those programs should be promoted which help them understand about the benefits of physical exercises and environment. Preschools should have a list of videos and movies which are focused towards the benefits of the children. It could be a good source of their education and entertainment as well.
Parents should not let their children use social media platforms and the internet as it will work for their benefit in the long run.
A child’s addiction to online media has become a cause of concern for millions of parents. The above mentioned solutions can definitely help your child overcome this addiction.
